AMUR LEOPARD AND TIGER ALLIANCE (ALTA)

 Conservation in China

Hunchun nature reserve

AMUR, ZSL and Tigris have started to co-operate even closer than in the past. ZSL is now responsible for administration of all funds, which enables Sharon Miller of AMUR and Michiel Hötte of Tigris to concentrate more on their respective work areas. Michiel is now a ZSL employee as well as Director of Tigris and is spending most of his time in the Russian Far East, acting as ALTA Coordinator, implementing field projects, liasing with other relevant groups, and collecting information on the current situation. AMUR is concentrating on public relations, political lobbying in Moscow, event organising and fundraising in Russia and the UK.

Our ALTA partners

Tigris Foundation is a member of the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance. ALTA is an initiative of Russian and western conservation organisations to conserve the highly endangered Amur Leopard and Siberian, or Amur Tiger. ALTA works across Northeast Asia under the guiding principle that only cooperative, coordinated conservation actions from all interested parties can save these endangered species from extinction. As an alliance of organisations with varying skills and expertise, ALTA works in close cooperation with local, regional, and federal governmental and non-governmental organizations, to protect the region’s biological wealth through conservation, sustainable development and local community involvement.

ALTA's mission is:

To secure a long-term future for self-sustaining wild populations of Amur tigers and leopards

Phoenix Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) have offices based in the Russian Far East and China. They provide a local framework for implementing ALTA projects, working closely with many Russian and Chinese agencies, and other NGOs such as WWF.
